No way out of Istanbul
After returning hopeful from the first leg games for the UEFA Europa Cup, both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are in pursuit to secure a spot in the finals in Hamburg. After a 1-1 draw in Spain, Galatasaray will host Atletico Madrid for the return match, while Fenerbahce, with a 2-1 loss, will be hosting France’s Lille tonight in Istanbul.
A 0-0 DRAW WILL BE ENOUGH FOR GALATASARAY
Having secured a 1-1 draw a week ago in Vicente Calderon, all Galatasaray needs tonight is a win or a 0-0 draw. Should their Spanish counterparts secure a win or a draw higher than 2-2, then they will be the round’s victors. In 1993, Galatasaray had signed on to the Champion’s League with a 3-3 win against Manchester United in an away game and a 0-0 draw in Istanbul for the return. Technical Director Rijkaard held a special training session yesterday to practice penalty shots should tonight’s game end in a 1-1 draw which would then require overtime followed by a penalty shoot-out.
FENERBAHCE MAKES IT WITH A 1-0 WIN
Fenerbahce will try to use the single goal scored in their 2-1 loss against Lille however, should the French team secure a win or a 2-2 draw or above, then they will be the ones to move onto the next round. Should Fenerbahce secure a 1-0 win however, they will then be the victors of the round, however, if Lille scores a goal in Istanbul tonight, then hosts Fenerbahce will need to ensure they have a two-score advantage. Should the game end in a 2-1 win for Fenerbahce then it will go into overtime followed by penalty shots.
