After the recent judicial crisis resulting in discord in Erzurum, Erzincan and Ankara, President Abdullah Gül hosted Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Judge Hasan Gerçeker, and Council of State President Mustafa Birden in the Çankaya Palace in order to discuss their views on the ‘judicial reform’ initiative.

Gül, who after the recent crisis is calling for judicial reform to be in accordance to the European Union criteria, first welcomed Judge Gerçeker at 11:00 yesterday. After holding a meeting which lasted 55 minutes, Gerçeker released information to the press at the entrance of the Supreme Court of Appeals. “The President asked our opinion regarding the judicial reform and we informed him regarding what form of judicial reform is necessary. There are variances on the issue between us and the Ministry of Justice.” Accordingly, Gül stated that the judicial reform needs to adhere to EU standards and that judicial services needed to be provided quicker.”
