Kurdish leaders want to unite with Turkey
According to the International Crisis Group, Kurds prefer the notion of joining Turkey over the environment of conflict which may be derived by US troop withdrawal. Barzani’s Spokesman states; “We will feel secure with Turkey’s protection.”
With headquarters located in Brussels, the American think-tank organization, the International Crisis Group, mentioned a number of striking findings in a report published yesterday on Iraq and the Kurds. The report drew attention to the increasing conflict environment developing between the Kurdish Regional Administration and the federal government in Iraq, and stated; “In the in the destructive and conflicting political environment of the past year, Northern Iraq’s Kurdish leaders ‘prefer the notion of the Kurdish region joining Turkey as a new Mosul.”
The report also noted that Turkey may indirectly become in charge of Kerkuk. Other attention-drawing points in the report included:- Kurdish authorities have met repeatedly with Turkish authorities. After all of these developments, Turkey’s idea of deserving the ‘Mosul Province’ following the Ottoman Empire has been regenerated. However, this time the notion has not been derived through Turkish nationalism, but instead is coming from the Kurds, including higher level authorities.
- Kurds are about to lose their US protection to Baghdad. This, in turn has resulted in Kurdish leaders turning towards Turkey.
- Turkey has the advantage of providing Europe with the exportation of petrol and pipelines from the Kurdish region.
- The Kurdish Regional Administration Spokesman, Fuad Hussein stated; “If the Shiites choose Iran and the Sunni’s the Arab world, then the Kurds will approach Turkey. The Turks also need the Kurds. We do not love each other, but we don’t have to. When America withdraws their troops there will be conflict. Turkey will have no other option. Under these conditions, the Kurds will take refuge under Turkey’s protection and in return, Turkey will have direct access to petrol and natural gas, as well as the reserves in Kerkuk and therefore will have control over Kerkuk.
- A State Minister from the Autonomous Kurdish region stated; “We need to be independent. However, between Iraq and Turkey, I prefer Turkey. Iraq is not democratic. The best route would be for the Kurdish region to join Turkey as a new Mosul state. Then, Turkey should join the EU.”
- A high-level Turkish authority expressed that he did not take warmly to the idea and stated; “In the future economic unity is feasible. However, it must be an unofficial, not an actual unity. We could deliberate with Baghdad on making the borders more flexible to allow for the creation of a free economic district.”
