A shaky night in eastern Turkey
A 6.0 magnitude earthquake rattled Elazığ at 04:32 am: 57 people dead, 71 wounded.
TWENTY-SEVEN AFTERSHOCKS
According to information released on the Bosphorus University Kandilli Meteorology and Earthquake Research Institute website, the 3.0 magnitude, which took place at 04:32 am, had a five-kilometer deep epicenter based in Başyurt, located in the Elazığ district of Karakoçan.
After the widely felt 6.0 earthquake in Elazığ, twenty-seven aftershocks, ranging from 2.5 to 4.1 in magnitude were recorded in the region.
THE EARTHQUAKE IN ELAZIĞ BROUGHT PEOPLE TO THE STREETS IN BİNGÖL
The 6.0 earthquake in Elazığ was also felt in Bingöl, where residents took to the streets. Stating they had exited their buildings in fear, some citizens even lit fires to endure the cold. Two people jumped off the first-floor balconies in panic and had to be treated for slight wounds in the Özel Bingöl Hospital and were later released.
SHOP WINDOWS SHATTERED IN ERZİNCAN DUE TO THE EARTHQUAKE
The earthquake at 04:32 am was reportedly felt for 20 seconds in Erzincan. According to initial findings by police forces, some storefront windows shattered on Fevzipaşa Street Caddesi.
CITIZENS TOOK TO THE STREETS
The Elazığ earthquake was also felt in Tunceli, many residents left their homes in fear and some even chose to spend the night outside.
