Efforts to contain a fire, which erupted, last night in a trash collection area in Bodrum’s Torba district and then spread to the forest region while also approaching residence areas, continued throughout the night up until this morning. The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

The fire started at a small distance from the Torba junction, and reached a proximity of up to 50 meters distance from residence areas. The fire, which started in the municipal dump escalated due to the increasing wind. Not only were the sites located nearby evacuated, but vacationers also pitched in a hand to help firefighters and forestry workers to contain the fire. Four dozers opened up a safety lane for access to the flames, while 20 sprinkler trucks and 10 firefighting trucks attempted to contain the fire. Due to the late night hours and the darkness which enveloped the area, efforts from the air were held off until the first signs of light.

FIRE EXTINGUISHING EFFORTS STARTED WITH ONE PLANE AND TWO HELICOPTERS

Along with the first signs of dawn beginning to show this morning, one plane and two helicopters attempted to contain the fire, which continued to burn in the forest having started in a rubbish dump located in Bodrum. As soon as the fire, which quickly spread to the forest, was taken under control by firefighters, Mugla Forestry Department teams joined in the efforts which continued until the early morning hours. The Bodrum-Milas Highway, which had been closed off as a result of the fire, has been reopened to traffic. Meanwhile, due to the flames, the sky over Bodrum is covered with a layer of smoke.
