The initial hearing on the second indictment in the Ergenekon investigation started yesterday at 09:30 in a brand new 740-capacity courtroom located next to the Silivri Penitentiary. Retired generals Eruygur and Tolon had been released due to medical reasons, however yesterday they were both ordered to undergo medical examinations.

With the exception of Levent Ersoz and Hasan Atilla Ugur, fifteen detained suspects were present at the first hearing by Istanbul’s 13th High Criminal Court. Twenty-three additional detained suspects, including retired full general Hursit Tolon, Ferda Paksut, Erol Mutercimler, Tercuman editor-in-chief Ufuk Buyukcelebi and Sinan Aygun were also available on waiting during the hearing.  Sener Eruygur, who was previously released and subsequently unable to attend the hearing due to medical reasons as well as Hursit Tolon, who was in attendance yesterday, yet also discharged due to medical reasons, will both have to undergo a medical examination to determine their status. The hearing has been adjourned until August 6th, in order for Istanbul’s 13th High Criminal Court to go over the third indictment which was recently released and to review a request from the court.
