Armed conflict in the Ukrainian Consulate

A man armed with a bomb and a gun tried to force his way into the Ukrainian consulate in Bakirköy early this morning, and was shot at by security forces.

All surrounding buildings are currently being evacuated. The intruder attempted to enter the consulate without allowing police to search him. When he pulled out a weapon, security forces responded by shooting him. It turns out the bag he did not want searched contained a time bomb.

Eyewitnesses stated that after hearing a gun go off; they then heard 5-6 additional rounds of gun shots. According to sources, there were staff members in the consulate at the time, however no one was hurt.   

The intruder who was shot was then taken to the Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Medical School and Research Hospital for treatment. The perpetrator is stated to have suffered from 4-5 shots and is in serious condition. 

It turns out the perpetrator, Volkan Ö. Made an attempt to enter the Ukrainian Consulate with a bomb because he had previously been tortured by Ukrainian police. Supposedly in his police report, the suspect stated that a burglar had entered his home in Ukraine and he had filed a complaint to the police, whom later arrested him claiming it was a false complaint. Supposedly, he had planned the attack in response to the treatment he received in prison. Volkan Ö. Had spent one year residing in Ukraine, however was deported following the burglary complaint.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
