Applause to director Kaplanoğlu
Semih Kaplanoğlu's film Honey was the recipient of the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin Film Festival held the day before yesterday.
News of the win was echoed not only in Turkey but throughout the world as Kaplanoğlu was rained with messages of congratulations. It had been 46 years since the last Turkish film; Metin Erksan's Dry Summer was awarded the Golden Bear. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent Kaplanoğlu a telegraph as an offer of congratulations. Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay also issued a congratulations message. Meanwhile, Honey also received coverage by the foreign press, including mentions in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper as well as Bild am Sonntag. The award also pleased those in the film industry in Turkey due to the long awaited recognition for Kaplanoğlu’s work.
